The places in between
(Book Club Kit)
Setting off in 2000, Stewart began walking the Muslim world, traveling through Iran, Pakistan, India and Nepal. Initially denied access to Afghanistan, Stewart was able to resume his journey after the fall of the Taliban in 2002. Following in the footsteps of Babur, the first emperor of Mughal India, he walked from Herat to Kabul accompanied by a small cadre of Afghani security forces. In the course of his travels, he met colorful characters from all walks of life, including rebels, thieves, soldiers and tribal elders. And faced with harsh weather, bandits, wildlife and countless other challenges, Stewart drew upon his wits and knowledge of the landscape and culture to survive this grueling adventure.
