Description

Personal history and moving to Telluride. Ran for County Commissioner after getting acquainted with locals. His wife Betty inquired about libraries. Telluride only had bookmobile that came to Telluride once a week. Established local support and obtained space in quonset hut. A non-profit organization formed and books were borrowed and donated. In 1974 a ballot was passed to establish a real library. Larry went to the town council for permission to use the old stone jail. Approval was made from the State for a historical grant to renovate. Story of renovating the jail. Eventually they ran out of room and created an addition. Stories of funding for addition and 1984 election. Creation of first library board. Building was complete in July 1987 and received two awards for design. Larry stayed involved in Pathfinder Regional Library System. Betty retired and a library director was hired. Mentions newspaper mircrofilm, oral history program and friends of the library group.
