Frances and Ruth's father formed a thrashing business for the hay and barley farms on Hastings Mesa. He also had his own barley farm. Ruth went to school on the mesa and finished high school in Ridgway. Frances speaks of life on the mesa. Louie and Ruth met, when he moved to Hastings Mesa. Louie and Ruth eventually settled in Sawpit where they owned and operated the general store in Sawpit from 1946-1972. Other topics include Sawpit dance hall; Sodie Beam's Cafe at Old Placerville; stories of "Oakies".
