Miner using a compressed air rock drill at the Gilman Mine. A battery operated miner's light is attached to his helmet, with the cord running to the light.
Dick Sayers (left) and John Skinner discussing the adjustments to equipment. A good view of the headlamp attachment to the battery pack carried on one's belt.
Tamping in dynamite prior to blasting a section at Gilman. Holes that have been prepared are shown with electrical connections to the blasting caps and the dynamite. Joe Fear prepared the blasting caps on the surface. Bottom series of holes were detonated first to keep the miners from having to work so much loose debris - a true demonstration of the principle of gravity.
Air operated mucking machine. The scoop goes over the mucking machine and empties the ore into the car behind. Miners also used these cars to move mining timbers throughout the mine.
Air operated mucking machine preparing to load material. The scoop would go over the mucking machine and empty the ore into the cart behind. Operator controls were at the left side of the machine.
Miner's helper assisting with tamping dynamite prior to blasting the exposed rock face. Both miners have the battery powered safety lights connected by the long cord to a pouch on their waists.
Steve Rich unloading mining timber at the bottom of the main shaft, level 16. The mining timbers were loaded vertically by the surface crew to fit the main cage that transported them down into the mine. A timber truck can be seen in the foreground and a "stern" warning sign is in the background.
Steve Rich loading mining timber onto a timber truck at the 16 level in the Gilman mine. After the timbers were removed from the shaft, they were turned horizontally for loading. Safety signs at left.

Lee Ferris lubricating a bearing on the main cage at the Gilman Mine.
The safety manager was a very important part of the mining team. Safety was stressed constantly through regular meetings and signs placed throughout the mine.
Bob Radabaugh, mine geologist, at the Gilman Mine. The geologists determined areas of optimum ore yield through various methods of inquiry. Bob is shown with one of the low tech methods, the rock hammer, checking the rock formation.
Drilling prior to adding dynamite to blast a section for mining at Gilman. Protective clothing was worn to keep the driller from being injured by debris, but we see no eye safety wear.
H. Lee Ferris is shown oiling, checking and adjusting landing chairs at #1 shaft. These landing chairs are safety devices that fall into a blocking postion under the floor of the cage when it reaches the top of the shaft. These devices are on the sides of the shaft and prevent the cage from descending into the shaft until such time as the landing chairs are released manually. Mr. Ferris is standing in the cage which has been lowered to a point...
