He stayed in and around Leadville for some time and then went to Cattle creek in Garfield county where he spent the winter. William and Cora Mayer, Chet's parents, ran the Mayer Ranch before Chet inherited it. That area is now the Eagle Ranch subdivision of Eagle, Colorado.
